The rare bronze food vessel or ‘fang yi’ of slightly tapering, rectangular form. The sides cast with three separate sections of ‘taotie’ masks, divided by notched flanges at the corners and in the centre. The cover with a nearly identical, yet inverted design, set below the faceted finial. The surface has a mottled blue-green and milky blue-green patination.
‘Fangyi’ (literally ‘square vessel’) were used as wine containers and are some of the rarest ritual vessels, only found in the most sumptuous tombs, compared to the more commonly found shapes, such a ‘gu’, ‘ding’ and ‘yue’. They are shaped like houses, of rectangular form with a roof-shaped lid, topped with a roof-shaped finial.
Compare a similar wine vessel (Late Shang dynasty, 12th-11th century B.C.), from the Sze Yuan Tang Collection, Christie’s New York, 16 September 2010, lot 822 and a slightly later vessel (Early Western Zhou dynasty, ca. 1025–ca. 975 BCE) in the collection of the Smithsonian, Accession Number F1930.54a-b.
