Shaped in the form of a five-petalled prunus-blossom, the central scene on the cover carved to depict scholars in various leisurely pursuits enjoying the views and the lake with their two attendants; all set amongst gnarled pine trees and rocks. The sides of the cover and base are decorated with five cartouches carved with various floral-sprays set against a diamond diaper ground. The interior and base are applied with black lacquer.
